How to SSH into a UXG Lite, UXG Max or UXG Pro

Sometimes, you might need to log into the command line interface of a UXG to perform firmware updates, get extra information that the GUI doesn't show and more.

If you want fast and reliable UniFi hosting, check out HostiFi with fast support, regular backups, managed updates and prices from just $9 per month.

What is the default password?

For a very long time, all UniFi devices use either the default credentials of ubnt for the username and ubnt for the password. Then, once the device is adopted UniFi Controller, the username and password get changed to the shared device credentials stored in the UniFi Network Application. The only exception has been the UXG, USG and the UniFi OS Consoles. These devices have the default username of root and the password of ubnt.

However, as of summer 2024, this seems to have changed somewhat. Now, all UniFi devices (APs and switches) use ui/ui and the UXG, USG and UniFi OS Consoles use root/ui. So if you are setting up a new device, try these new passwords, along with the old ones, if you are having issues.

Logging into the UXG Pro via SSH for the first time

macOS

On macOS, open up the Terminal application

Type in ssh root@192.168.1.1 then hit return, if your device happens to be on a different IP address, use the below format.

ssh <username>@<ip-address>

Next, click the return key and the UXG Pro will ask for a password. The password is either ubnt or ui.

Username: root
Password: ubnt or ui

Once logged in you'll be greeted with the welcome message. From there you can upgrade the firmware via SSH or adopt it a HostiFi controller.

Windows

Open up PuTTY, as Windows does not have a built in SSH client.

See this guide on how to install PuTTY on Windows

Type in 192.168.1.1 or the IP address for your UXG Pro

Next click 'Open'

After that, PuTTY will display a security message about the rsa2 fingerprint. On this window, press Accept to allow the connection

Next the UXG Pro will ask for a username, which is 'root'

Next, click the return key and the UXG Pro will ask for a password. The password is either ubnt or ui.

Username: root
Password: ubnt or ui

Once logged in you'll be greeted with the welcome message. From there you can upgrade the firmware via SSH or adopt it a HostiFi controller.

Logging into the UXG Pro via SSH once it has been adopted

The process for logging into the UXG Pro once it has been adopted it very similar, the username and password are now determined by the UniFi Controller. Everything else mentioned above is the same.

Finding the username and password in UniFi

Once a device is adopted into the UniFi Controller, they take on the set SSH credentials from the controller.

First, log into your UniFi Controller and go to the 'Settings' section

Under settings, go to the 'System' tab

Scroll down to find a section called 'Network Device SSH Authentication', where the SSH credentials can be found. Use these to log into your UXG Pro using the guide above.
