Learn how to update firmware on a airMAX M and airMAX AC device, where to find it and how to troubleshoot it if it doesn't work.

airMAX M

First, download the correct firmware for your device from Ubiquiti's downloads page. airMAX M products come in three builds, XW, XM and TI. The appropriate version can be found under 'System'.

Go to the 'System' tab of the device that you wish to upgrade

Under Firmware section, click the 'Choose File' button and upload the firmware that was downloaded earlier

Click upload

Once the file has been uploaded, it will be checked for compatibility and an Update button will appear.

Click 'Update' and wait for the device to come back online.

airMAX AC

Once the file has been uploaded, it will be checked for compatibility and an Update button will appear.

Click 'Update' and wait for the device to come back online.

Troubleshooting

File size too large

If the device comes back with a message saying "File size too large", then you might need to reboot the device, as the older M devices have a limited amount of RAM to store the new file in temporarily.

Legacy Devices

Firmware for the airMAX M devices and older Legacy (non-airMAX) devices are found under two separate menus on the download page.

TFTP

If the firmware update does not complete after multiple attempts, or if the airOS GUI is completely unreachable then it might be necessary to do a TFTP recovery on the device.

HostiFi

HostiFi provides hosting for both Ubiquiti and TP-Link software-defined-networking (SDN) applications, with servers for UniFi, UISP and Omada. We also offer professional networking consulting, with HostiFi Pro.
